Aden: A recent incident off the Yemeni coast has underscored the ongoing security threats in the Red Sea, as an armed group targeted a sailing vessel, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). This attempted boarding highlights the precarious nature of the region’s maritime environment, where both commercial and private ships face constant risks. The UKMTO reported that a boat carrying 10 to 12 individuals, including four to five armed with automatic weapons, approached a sailing vessel approximately 54 nautical miles southwest of Al Hudaydah.
The situation escalated when the unidentified group demanded that the vessel stop. When the captain refused, the attackers intensified their efforts, attempting to board the ship. This aggressive maneuver prompted the crew to take immediate evasive actions to thwart the takeover. The crew’s quick response was crucial in de-escalating the confrontation.
In a decisive move, the captain deployed a flare, successfully deterring the attackers, who then retreated to the southeast without further incident or reported injuries. Following this encounter, UKMTO confirmed that authorities are investigating the incident and have advised vessels in the area to navigate with caution and report any suspicious activities.
