Automated Wind-Powered Solutions to Decarbonize Shipping

Æther Swiss Kite is an innovative project launched three years ago, stemming from the SP80 initiative aimed at setting a world speed sailing record. Unlike SP80, Æther focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping vessels by 20% or more, depending on various factors like route and wind conditions. The team of around 60 students is developing an automated control system to launch and fly a large kite attached to a vessel, leveraging wind power to enhance fuel efficiency.

While existing technologies like the SeaKite system from Beyond the Sea are already available, Æther does not aim to compete with these companies but rather to contribute to the industry by providing an open-source control system that improves kite traction. The kites must operate in a “power zone” to maximize pull, requiring them to follow a figure-eight flying pattern for optimal performance. The project has faced challenges, including kite crashes during testing, but the team remains committed to refining their technology.

The system is designed to be adaptable to existing vessels, allowing operators to install a control box without major modifications. This approach aims to reduce fuel consumption without necessitating costly renovations. The project also acknowledges the limitations posed by wind conditions, which can affect the kite’s efficiency. The team is preparing for a pilot test on Lake Neuchâtel, marking a significant step in evaluating their system’s effectiveness on a larger scale.
