Classification society ClassNK has launched the world’s first notation, ‘a-EA (CFP)’, to indicate that greenhouse gas emissions from ship construction have been calculated and verified by a third party. This notation, now part of ClassNK’s Environmental Guidelines, aims to assist shipyards, shipowners, and shipping companies in demonstrating the environmental value of vessels while supporting the disclosure of Scope 3 emissions.
The ‘a-EA (CFP)’ notation signifies that the carbon footprint from ship construction has been assessed in line with ISO 14067, an international standard for carbon footprint calculations. As interest in decarbonization and supply-chain emissions reporting grows, the importance of assessing greenhouse gas emissions linked to ship construction has become increasingly significant.
In the shipping sector, emissions from constructing vessels fall under Scope 3 Category 2, or capital goods. ClassNK notes that current emissions calculations often rely on default values that may not accurately reflect the use of low-carbon materials or emission reduction practices during construction.
The new notation will help shipyards showcase their efforts in minimizing environmental impacts, while providing shipowners and shipping companies with verified data to enhance the accuracy of their Scope 3 emissions disclosures.
