FMC Chairman Laura DiBella Advocates Against IMO Net-Zero Framework
This week, Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) Chairman Laura DiBella participated in the U.S. delegation at the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 84th Maritime Environmental Protection Committee session in London. DiBella is vocal about the U.S. opposition to the IMO’s Net-Zero Framework (NZF), arguing that it imposes unnecessary financial burdens on U.S. shippers and vessels operating internationally.
The NZF is projected to cost the maritime industry billions annually, with these expenses ultimately passed on to U.S. consumers, who are the largest consumers of imported goods. The FMC is committed to safeguarding U.S. cargo and scrutinizes foreign regulations that may adversely affect U.S. shipping interests.
In her discussions with IMO member countries, DiBella emphasized that the NZF could create an anticompetitive and inflationary impact on the global economy. The FMC has the authority to take action against unfavorable shipping conditions, including imposing fines or barring foreign vessels from U.S. ports, ensuring protection for U.S. shippers in the international trade landscape.
