Korean Register (KR) and HD Hyundai Samho celebrated the completion of their joint project on “AI-Based Solution Development for Design and Analysis Innovation” at Posidonia 2026 in Athens, Greece, on June 3. This initiative, launched under a Memorandum of Understanding in June 2025, aimed to integrate AI technology into shipbuilding to enhance efficiency and precision in design and analysis.

Over the course of a year, the project focused on two main areas: developing an AI-driven optimization solution for hull support arrangements and creating a generative AI service for managing shipbuilding design documents. Traditionally, determining hull support configurations required extensive structural analysis; however, the new AI model can conduct this assessment in near real-time, allowing users to quickly evaluate multiple arrangements for optimal support.

Additionally, a domain-specific Large Language Model (LLM) was developed to streamline the management of complex design documents, ensuring that valuable knowledge is easily accessible to a wider range of personnel. This initiative aims to boost operational efficiency and productivity within shipyards.

With the project concluded, both KR and HD Hyundai Samho are set to accelerate the implementation of AI technologies across various design and analysis workflows, with plans to extend its use to additional operational areas.
