MACN Launches Data-Driven Tool to Combat Corruption

The maritime anti -corruption network: strengthening integrity at sea

The Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) has successfully converted over a decade’s worth of corruption reports into a functional database, creating the Global Port Integrity Platform (GPIP) with support from the Danish Maritime Fund. This platform utilizes data from more than 70,000 reports submitted by vessel owners and managers, encompassing 1,350 ports globally. The tools offered by GPIP enable shipping companies to assess risks, prepare crews prior to port arrivals, and seamlessly incorporate corruption intelligence into their operational processes.

Currently, 75 organizations are utilizing the dashboard tools provided by the platform, while over 350 shipping companies benefit from corruption risk information through pre-arrival communication systems. Cecilia Müller Torbrand, CEO of MACN, highlighted that while the shipping industry generates vast amounts of operational data, structured data to manage corruption risks at ports has been historically limited.

This initiative exemplifies the potential of maritime data to be transformed into actionable intelligence that enhances decision-making, safeguards crews, and fosters integrity within the industry. The platform automatically delivers port-specific information to crews ahead of their arrival, with plans for future AI-enabled applications. Uriel Chareca, Head of Group Data & AI at Torm, noted that the API integration with MACN’s corruption incidents database opens new avenues for innovation in the maritime sector.
