Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted the first Type Approval Certificate for a fully hydrogen-fueled, spark-ignited marine engine developed by BeHydro. This certification confirms that the engine meets LR’s stringent safety and performance standards for marine applications.

Tested at ABC Engines’ facility in Ghent, the innovative engine operates solely on hydrogen, eliminating the need for pilot fuels. This design not only simplifies the system but also completely removes carbon emissions onboard, making it a viable solution for operators seeking zero-carbon propulsion.

Earlier in 2023, LR awarded Type Approval to BeHydro for a hydrogen-powered dual-fuel engine, marking a significant milestone as the first Type Approval for such a technology.
