DNV, an independent energy expert, has collaborated with Femern Link Contractors (FLC) on the Fehmarn Belt immersed tunnel project, providing independent verification of the advanced lifting system used for tunnel element installation. The 18-kilometer tunnel will connect Denmark and Germany, with the first 217-meter element successfully immersed in May 2026. This subsea structure is constructed by floating pre-made sections to the site and lowering them into a seabed trench.

The installation relies on a specialized lifting system designed to position large concrete elements with precision under offshore conditions. DNV’s role included verifying the design, fabrication, and commissioning phases of the lifting appliance on the immersion pontoons, IVY 1 and IVY 2. Their assessment focused on technical compliance and safety performance, ultimately leading to certification of the hoisting system.

This verified lifting appliance is crucial for the tunnel installation process, ensuring readiness and enhancing confidence in equipment reliability during offshore operations. Close collaboration between DNV and FLC has been vital in addressing the project’s technical complexities, with DNV conducting technical reviews, on-site inspections, and certification activities alongside construction.

FLC is a joint venture comprising multiple companies from France, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
