NAPA has introduced a digital checklist system aimed at enhancing onboard operations, with HX Expeditions being one of the initial adopters. The NAPA Checklist replaces traditional paper and static PDF checklists with dynamic workflows that guide crew members through procedures in the correct sequence. Each completed action is automatically logged with a timestamp and the name of the individual who performed it, streamlining the process and minimizing the need for duplicate data entry by feeding completed tasks directly into the NAPA Logbook.
Vsevolod Pashkov, Maritime Compliance Manager and CSO at HX Expeditions, emphasized the importance of balancing consistency with practical flexibility in remote environments. He noted that the tool was co-developed to align with the actual working practices of crews, anticipating improvements in operational consistency and efficiency, as well as enhanced real-time information sharing between ship and shore.
The system integrates with NAPA Fleet Intelligence, enabling shore-based safety and compliance teams to create, update, and distribute checklist templates to individual vessels or entire fleets, while monitoring completion statuses in real-time. Designed for both mandatory checklists under ISM and SOLAS regulations and operator-specific safety management procedures, NAPA Checklist has been developed in collaboration with cruise and expedition operators since autumn 2024.
Sami Koponen, Product Owner for NAPA Checklist, highlighted the distinction between merely digitizing forms and creating a guided workflow that integrates seamlessly with existing ship operations. The development process involved input from crew members, which has contributed to strong adoption rates across deployments. The primary goal was to alleviate the workload of crew members rather than introduce another system to manage.
