A significant fire erupted on the Ro-Ro cargo vessel Blue Carrier while navigating north of Mykonos, Greece, leading to an extensive emergency response from local authorities. All 28 crew members and one passenger successfully evacuated the ship and are reported to be unharmed.
The blaze ignited around 8:57 a.m. in one of the vessel’s garages while it was en route to Samos, carrying 166 trucks and 29 passenger vehicles. The crew and passenger utilized lifeboats to escape the vessel and were subsequently rescued by nearby ships, which transported them safely to Tinos.
In response to the incident, Greek authorities dispatched multiple resources, including four Hellenic Coast Guard patrol boats, two firefighting boats, and two helicopters from the Hellenic Fire Service. Additional support included two Coast Guard vessels, two tugboats, and specialized anti-pollution ships to manage the fire and mitigate environmental risks.
The operation prioritizes extinguishing the flames and preventing marine pollution, with nearby ports on alert with anti-pollution equipment. The Blue Carrier, built in 1997 and registered under the Greek flag, measures 162.5 meters in length and has a gross tonnage of 23,986.
