Swedish Maritime Administration Warns Against Restructuring Rescue Responsibilities

The Swedish Maritime Administration has called on the government to maintain its role in maritime and air rescue services, following a formal inquiry into the restructuring of Sweden’s emergency response framework. This request comes in light of a consultation response concerning a report titled “A new domicile strengthens maritime and air rescue services in Sweden.”

The inquiry suggests that the operational responsibilities for maritime and air rescue should be transferred to the Swedish Coast Guard. Meanwhile, the Swedish Civil Defence Agency would take over duties related to training, operational development, and environmental rescue efforts.

In its response, the Maritime Administration expressed strong opposition to the proposed transfer of operational duties. The agency emphasized that decisions regarding agency responsibilities should consider the broader interests of Sweden and prioritize the critical mission of saving lives.
