The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has solidified its leading position in the container shipping industry with a significant fleet expansion, acquiring a remarkable number of used ships. This strategic move has propelled MSC to the top of Alphaliner’s liner operator rankings, with a fleet of 852 vessels totaling over 6 million TEU and capturing nearly 20% of the market share. Surpassing Maersk in early 2022, MSC continues to widen the gap with its competitors through an aggressive expansion strategy focused on acquiring additional vessels.
Recent reports indicate that MSC has added two more ships to its fleet: the 1,440 TEU CAPE FLINT from the German Schoeller Group and the 2,526 TEU JAN RITSCHER from the Gerd Ritscher shipping company. This is in addition to other summer acquisitions, including medium-sized vessels like the 5,364 TEU ALWAYS UNITY and five “classic Panamax” ships with capacities ranging from 4,173 to 4,713 TEU. According to Alphaliner, MSC has purchased a total of 383 used container ships in the past four years, further solidifying its position in the industry.
MSC’s relentless pursuit of expansion reflects its commitment to maintaining dominance in the container shipping market. With a focus on acquiring a diverse range of vessels, the company is poised to continue its growth trajectory and strengthen its competitive edge. As MSC bolsters its fleet with strategic acquisitions, it is clear that the company is determined to remain at the forefront of the industry and retain its leading position.
