Viking and Fincantieri have revealed plans for the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra, set for delivery in 2026. Currently being constructed at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard, the vessel will operate with zero emissions, thanks to a hybrid propulsion system powered by hydrogen-fueled fuel cells. The Viking Astrea, another ocean ship by Viking, is also under construction and expected to be delivered in 2027.
The Viking Libra, with a gross tonnage of around 54,300 tons, will feature 499 staterooms capable of accommodating 998 guests. Fincantieri’s subsidiary, Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM), specializing in advanced fuel cell technology, will provide the ship’s propulsion system capable of generating up to six megawatts of power. Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, emphasized the significance of the Viking Libra in shaping the future of sustainable maritime transportation.
In addition to the Viking Libra and Viking Astrea, Viking and Fincantieri have contracts for two more ocean ships to be delivered in 2031, with an option for two additional ships in 2033. Viking also has plans to receive 26 river ships by 2028 and 11 ocean ships by 2031. These orders will bring Viking’s fleet to 110 river ships by 2028 and 23 ocean and expedition ships by 2031, further solidifying their commitment to sustainable and innovative maritime transportation.
