French shipping giant CMA CGM has achieved a significant milestone by reflagging its fifth container vessel under the Indian registry, reflecting India’s rising status as a maritime hub. The ceremony at a major west coast port reinforces the company’s commitment to India, having previously reflagged three vessels in 2025 and one in early 2026. This initiative aligns with the Indian government’s Maritime India Vision 2030, which offers incentives such as tax benefits and access to financing in GIFT City.
By 2030, India aims to secure a 5% share of global shipping tonnage, which is bolstered by CMA CGM’s investment in six LNG-powered vessels from Cochin Shipyard, all flagged under India. The reflagging provides operational advantages, such as priority berthing at key ports and improved connectivity for faster cargo evacuation, crucial for handling increasing export quotas and optimizing logistics.
Furthermore, CMA CGM’s expansion contributes to better congestion management at Indian ports, tapping into a ₹10,000 crore coastal trade potential. This move, following similar reflagging efforts by MSC and Maersk, enhances India’s attractiveness as a shipping destination and integrates with broader initiatives like Gati Shakti for enhanced infrastructure efficiency.
