Royal Caribbean International has confirmed the extension of its Icon class order, adding the sixth and seventh ships at Meyer Turku. While the sixth ship’s order is finalized, the seventh is contingent upon standard conditions, including financing. This announcement follows the commencement of sea trials for the third ship, Legend of the Seas, which began its journey from Turku, Finland, on April 19. The ship will undergo a 10-day testing period with 2,000 engineers onboard, assessing systems and the performance of its LNG-fueled engines before entering service in July.

The Icon class ships, the largest ever at 248,663 gross tons, aim to compete with land-based resorts by offering diverse experiences for multi-generational families. Each ship measures 1,196 feet (364 meters) and features 2,800 passenger cabins, accommodating over 7,600 passengers alongside a crew of 2,350. Amenities include multiple pools, waterslides, and a variety of dining options, including a new supper club on Legend of the Seas. Notable enhancements for the upcoming Hero of the Seas include additional pools and a unique family accommodation.

These new orders are part of a long-term agreement with Meyer Turku, ensuring shipbuilding capacity through 2036. The fifth Icon ship is set for delivery in 2028, with the sixth and seventh scheduled for 2029 and 2030, respectively. This collaboration reflects a long-standing partnership, dating back to the construction of Royal Caribbean’s first ships in the late 1960s.

The cruise industry is currently booming, with an order book exceeding $86 billion, projected to reach $100 billion. There are 76 cruise ships over 1,000 gross tons on order, translating to over 205,000 berths. Alongside the five Icon class ships, Royal Caribbean has also ordered an additional Oasis class ship and announced plans for new Discovery class vessels, with deliveries expected in 2029 and 2032.
