Kochi is poised to welcome its third roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel next month, enhancing the city’s water transport system and alleviating travel demand on the heavily trafficked Vypeen–Fort Kochi route. This addition is part of a broader initiative aimed at improving last-mile connectivity across the Kochi backwaters, which are vital for daily commuters and tourists alike.
The new Ro-Ro ferry, constructed by Cochin Shipyard for the Kochi Municipal Corporation and operated by KSINC, features a double-ended design that facilitates quicker boarding and disembarkation. This launch follows the introduction of previous Ro-Ro vessels, which have already made significant strides in enhancing travel convenience on one of Kerala’s busiest ferry routes.
The service is anticipated to substantially reduce waiting times and enhance passenger flow between Vypeen and Fort Kochi, particularly during peak hours and holidays. With increased vehicle-carrying capacity, the new vessel is expected to alleviate road traffic congestion and bolster Kochi’s integrated transport framework.
Cochin Shipyard’s involvement underscores the advancing capabilities of India’s domestic shipbuilding sector in delivering specialized passenger vessels for inland and coastal use.
