India expressed its strong condemnation of attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers during the ongoing Gulf conflict at the UN General Assembly. The nation emphasized that such actions are “simply unacceptable” and called for restraint from all parties involved. The External Affairs Minister highlighted the need to lower tensions, protect civilians, and ensure the smooth flow of energy and commerce, noting that new maritime challenges have compounded existing land issues.
The Minister pointed out that the current conflict in the Gulf is worsening an already precarious situation, with attacks on commercial vessels and seafarers occurring across various regions, including the Gulf, Red Sea, and Black Sea. He stressed that the loss of life among Indian seafarers, as well as those from other countries, is intolerable. India has joined Liberia and 23 other nations in a global initiative aimed at raising awareness against these unwarranted attacks, advocating for the safety and security of maritime operations.
In light of the continued threats to merchant shipping, India and Liberia recently established the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers. This initiative was launched to address the increasing risks faced by seafarers, particularly in strategic waterways like the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman, where Indian sailors are notably vulnerable. India’s message remains clear: the safety of shipping and seafarers must be prioritized, and such attacks must cease.
