The Indian Coast Guard recently conducted an exercise to showcase its maritime security and anti-piracy operations off the coast of Thiruvananthapuram. During the exercise, four Coast Guard ships encountered a ‘pirate’ ship, and a speedboat with commandos onboard was launched to approach and board the vessel. The commandos conducted a search and apprehended an ‘accused’ individual, demonstrating the force’s capabilities in handling such situations. The exercise aimed to raise awareness about the Coast Guard’s daily activities in safeguarding the country’s strategic interests at sea.

The demonstration included the firepower and operational capacity of the Coast Guard ships, such as the ICGS Anagha, in overpowering pirates or suspicious vessels. Additionally, a Dornier aircraft from the Coast Guard in Kochi participated in the operations, showcasing the coordination and resources used in maritime security. Station Commander G Sreejumar emphasized that the exercise was designed to educate the public about the Coast Guard’s crucial role in protecting national interests and ensuring maritime safety.

The event attracted various guests, including government officials, entrepreneurs, and families, who witnessed the pirate ship boarding operation and the firing of the Bofors 4060 gun aboard the ICGS Anagha. A young student named Akash Asha expressed his excitement at witnessing the demonstration, particularly the power displayed during the gun firing. After nearly two hours at sea, the Coast Guard ships returned to Vizhinjam fishing harbor, providing guests with a memorable experience of the force’s operations and capabilities.
