The Tugboat, Fuel Barges, and Seagoing Vessel Association of Nigeria (TUBAVS) has urged federal and security agencies to enhance measures against sea piracy and illegal oil bunkering in Nigerian waters. In a recent statement, TUBAVS emphasized the need for immediate censorship, verification, and stricter regulation of all marine vessels operating in the region. This initiative aims to safeguard national security, revenue, and the marine environment.

TUBAVS, which advocates for maritime operators, called for comprehensive oversight of various vessels, including tankers, barges, and fishing boats. Legal Adviser Tonye Wilson highlighted the increasing threats posed by illegal bunkering and stressed the urgency of implementing these controls under the Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offences Act of 2019.

The association mandated that all vessels must undergo censorship and verification within 90 days of the announcement. To register, operators must provide necessary documentation, including proof of ownership and licenses from relevant agencies. Each verified vessel will receive a Unique Vessel Identification Number (UVIN) and must display its name clearly on both the bow and stern, adhering to TUBAVS guidelines.

Implementation of these measures is slated to commence from August 15, 2026, to November 30, 2026, marking a significant step towards enhancing maritime safety and compliance in Nigeria.
