A small cargo vessel, the Sitthaa, reported flooding in several compartments while operating off the Indian Coast near Tiruchendur. In response, the Indian Coast Guard deployed its ship, Atulya, to assist in stabilizing the situation and escorting the vessel to port. Built in 1996 and registered in Comoros, the Sitthaa has a deadweight tonnage of 649.
Upon arrival, a specialized team boarded the Sitthaa and collaborated with salvage experts to address the flooding. They monitored the water intake while conducting emergency repairs and dewatering efforts, successfully bringing the situation under control. The Coast Guard had previously noted that the vessel faced multiple issues, leading to a detention during a port state inspection in 2025, which identified 14 deficiencies, including hull damage that affected seaworthiness.
After stabilizing the Sitthaa, the Coast Guard transported it to Tiruchendur for further survey and repairs. This incident is part of a series of challenging calls the Coast Guard has handled recently, underscoring their commitment to maritime safety and emergency response.
