The Indian Coast Guard has inducted the ICGS Akshay, a new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel, in Goa, enhancing its coastal security capabilities. Built by Goa Shipyard Limited, Akshay is the first of eight vessels under a program that emphasizes India’s commitment to indigenous shipbuilding.
The ICGS Akshay is equipped to handle various operations, including maritime law enforcement, coastal surveillance, search and rescue, and environmental protection. Its induction is expected to bolster the Coast Guard’s response capabilities across India’s extensive maritime territory.
Officials highlight that Akshay’s commissioning represents a significant step in the modernization of the Coast Guard, aligning with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, as the vessel is designed and constructed domestically. This new addition is part of a strategic effort to enhance maritime readiness and better protect the nation’s coastline.
In addition to security tasks, the ICGS Akshay will play a vital role in ensuring clean and safe seas, amid rising maritime threats and environmental concerns that demand vigilant monitoring and rapid responses from coastal security agencies.
