On July 4, an Indian Navy Sea King helicopter successfully evacuated an injured seafarer from the Shipping Corporation of India’s crude oil tanker, MT Desh Shakti, off the coast of Mumbai. The operation took place amid challenging weather conditions, including heavy rain, poor visibility, and rough seas. The helicopter, which flew from INS Shikra, utilized a rescue basket to retrieve the injured crew member, ensuring he was stabilized on board before being transported to shore for urgent medical care.
The rescue mission was conducted as Mumbai and nearby areas remained affected by severe rain, prompting the issuance of a red alert. A defense spokesperson highlighted the successful completion of the operation despite the adverse conditions, emphasizing the Navy’s capability to respond in emergencies at sea.
As heavy rainfall continued to disrupt daily life in Mumbai, road cave-ins, tree falls, and house collapses were reported, causing significant challenges for local residents. The India Meteorological Department had issued an alert for extremely heavy rainfall, leading local authorities to declare a holiday for schools and colleges. Waterlogging in various low-lying areas further complicated public transport, affecting commuters throughout the city.
The Indian Navy affirmed its commitment to saving lives at sea, underlining its crucial role as a first responder in the Indian Ocean Region. However, further details regarding the injured seafarer’s condition or the cause of the injury were not disclosed.
