Industrial leaders from the nuclear and maritime sectors have established the NEUMAR association, which is designed to promote nuclear innovation within the maritime industry. This initiative aims to lower the carbon footprint of maritime transport while ensuring competitiveness, energy security, and national sovereignty. Officially launched on June 3, 2026, NEUMAR seeks to expedite the integration of advanced nuclear technologies to facilitate a sustainable energy transition for maritime operations and coastal regions.
Backed by both French and broader European enterprises, NEUMAR unites industrial, institutional, and financial stakeholders with the goal of positioning Europe as a leader in maritime nuclear solutions on an international scale. The association’s initial focus will include developing infrastructure tailored to maritime needs, establishing a regulatory and financial framework that encourages secure and low-risk deployment, and fostering collaboration between European nuclear and maritime sectors.
The association will leverage the expertise and resources of its members while adhering to international standards for nuclear safety, security, and nonproliferation. According to Mr. Luc Van Den Durpel, the newly elected President of NEUMAR, the partners are committed to spearheading innovation in maritime energy by harnessing the full potential of nuclear energy, balancing climate responsibility with industrial excellence.
