Kerala Ports Minister V N Vasavan recently announced that the Vizhinjam transshipment port has achieved a significant milestone by handling three lakh Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of cargo during a successful six-month trial period. This accomplishment marks a historic moment for the port, showcasing its capability to handle a large volume of cargo efficiently.

Constructed through a public-private partnership at a cost of Rs 8,867 crore, the Vizhinjam port has already welcomed approximately 150 ships, including some of the world’s largest container vessels. In January alone, the port serviced 45 ships and managed 85,000 TEUs of cargo, solidifying its position as a key trade gateway for India. The port’s success is a testament to its strategic location and state-of-the-art facilities.

The deep-water port, developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, a subsidiary of the Adani Group, received its commercial commissioning certificate on December 4th of the previous year. This certification further validates the port’s readiness to handle large volumes of cargo and serve as a crucial hub for international trade. The Vizhinjam port’s impressive performance is a promising sign for its future growth and contribution to India’s maritime industry.
