A Japanese cargo ferry, the Niraikanai II, ran aground while traveling from Osaka to Tokyo on June 19. The incident occurred around 3:30 AM local time near Toshima Island, a small uninhabited island off Honshu. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of damage or environmental concerns, but the vessel remains stuck despite attempts to free it throughout Friday. The ferry is primarily used for transporting cars and cargo along its route.

The Niraikanai II, built in 2017, measures 181 meters (594 feet) in length and has a gross tonnage of 11,687. It is operated by Ryukyu Kaiun and is noted for its environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient electronically controlled main engine. At the time of the grounding, it was unclear how heavily loaded the ferry was, and there were 17 crew members on board.

The Japan Coast Guard has announced that an investigation into the cause of the grounding will be conducted. Reports indicate that sea conditions were calm during the incident, with winds below 12 knots and wave heights under two feet, suggesting that weather factors were likely not a contributing issue.
