Maritime and offshore energy leaders from South America recently convened for the inaugural meeting of the ABS South America Regional Committee. ABS Senior Vice President of Global Business Development, Vassilios Kroustallis, highlighted the organization’s longstanding presence in the region and expressed enthusiasm for the collaborative discussions aimed at advancing innovation in the maritime and offshore industries. ABS currently holds the top position in global orderbook share and oversees a fleet of 301 million gross tons with over 11,600 assets.
Wilson Pereira de Lima Filho, VADM (Ret) Director of the National Waterway Transportation Agency and Chairman of the ABS South America Regional Committee, emphasized the critical role of ABS in promoting safety at sea and environmental preservation. He underscored the importance of addressing issues such as the energy transition and reducing greenhouse gas emissions within the maritime sector. The committee’s discussions are expected to shape the future of the industry, particularly in light of the growing significance of the blue economy.
During the meeting, Transpetro Chief Operating Officer, Captain Jones Soares, provided insights into human factors related to navigation safety. ABS specialists presented updates on major market trends, including the transition to alternative fuels such as methanol and ammonia. The committee also received updates on greenhouse gas reduction targets set by the IMO and explored strategies for compliance with FuelEU Maritime regulations. In the offshore sector, ABS maintains a leading position in the fleet for exploration, production, and support vessels.
