The ABS has granted a product design assessment (PDA) to Fleetzero for its Leviathan™ Battery Energy Storage System, marking a significant milestone as the first U.S.-manufactured lithium iron phosphate (LFP) marine battery to earn classification approval. This assessment validates the Leviathan system’s suitability for marine applications and paves the way for its implementation in future projects requiring certified battery technology.
Engineered with LFP chemistry, the Leviathan operates at voltage levels up to 1,000 VDC, and its depth of discharge ranges from 2% to 98%, boasting an IP67 rating. The system’s modular and containerized design offers versatility, allowing it to be tailored, deployed, and replaced across diverse vessel types and applications. Gareth Burton, ABS Senior Vice President of Global Engineering, emphasized that class-approved battery technology is vital for enhancing confidence among shipowners and integrators during the electrification transition.
The inaugural commercial use of the Leviathan system is set to launch later this year, encompassing a deployment of 10 MWh as part of a vessel’s transition to hybrid-electric propulsion.
