ABS has granted approval in principle (AIP) for a concept design of a nuclear-powered 15,000 TEU containership. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).
The vessel will be equipped with a small modular reactor (SMR) and is part of an ongoing project aimed at assessing the technical feasibility of nuclear-powered commercial shipping. The design incorporates a marine molten salt reactor (MSR) and is a key component of a multi-year collaboration focused on overcoming technical challenges and advancing next-generation nuclear vessel designs.
Within this joint development framework, KRISO is responsible for the overall concept design of the containership, while KAERI has designed the MSR. ABS has completed the AIP review, marking a significant milestone in this innovative venture.
