The Australian Government has selected five organizations to train the next generation of seafarers as part of its Maritime Skills and Training Initiative (MSTI). This initiative aims to bolster the country’s maritime workforce by providing essential sea time for trainees and cadets to achieve international certification. With an investment of $13.8 million, the program seeks to alleviate critical skills shortages within the maritime sector.
Over the next four years, the funding will support more than 20 trainee and cadet seafarers annually, covering expenses such as wages, accommodation, food, and transportation. The successful applicants include Teekay Shipping (Australia) Pty Ltd, Maritime Employees Training Ltd, Boluda Towage (Australia) Pty Ltd, Siera Marine Management Pty Ltd, and Sea Swift Pty Ltd.
Additionally, the initiative will receive an extra $2.5 million from Industry Skills Australia to address training barriers and enhance pathways into maritime careers. MSTI aligns with key recommendations from the 2023 Strategic Fleet Taskforce Report, which emphasizes the need for improved access to training berths on vessels. This initiative complements the government’s broader investments in the Maritime Strategic Fleet pilot program, further strengthening Australia’s maritime capabilities.
