bound4blue has achieved Type Approval Design Certification (TADC) from DNV for its Model 3-24 eSAIL, the company’s most powerful suction sail, during a ceremony at Posidonia 2026 in Athens. This certification verifies that the system meets DNV’s safety, structural integrity, and design robustness standards.

The Model 3 range, designed for larger vessels, aims to maximize wind power’s propulsive contribution. The Model 3-24, with a height of 24 meters, has already been installed on the DNV-classed MV Baltazar, enhancing aerodynamic efficiency and enabling significant fuel savings and emissions reductions for various vessel types.

Built on the established Model 2 platform, the 3-24 eSAIL features an increased sail surface area and wider chord, enhancing propulsion while simplifying integration. Its autonomous operation employs boundary layer suction technology to optimize propulsive force, effectively lowering fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

As regulatory pressures to reduce emissions grow, wind propulsion is emerging as a viable solution for both retrofits and new builds. The plug-and-play design of eSAILs allows them to work alongside traditional propulsion systems, supporting the transition to alternative fuels like methanol and ammonia, thereby helping shipowners navigate regulatory challenges.
