Lloyd’s Register (LR) has partnered with Marlink to enhance the maritime sector’s management of complex onboard digital systems. This collaboration aims to transition the industry from fragmented digitalisation strategies to a more integrated approach. Marlink will join LR’s Digital Transformation Research Programme, focusing on key challenges such as connectivity, cybersecurity, and the integration of digital systems as vessels become more data-driven and interconnected.
This partnership builds on insights from LR’s Digital Maturity Index (DMI), which evaluates the industry’s digital adoption progress. Initial findings reveal that while connectivity and cybersecurity are advancing, there remains a significant gap between ambition and actual implementation. Mark Warner, Client Marketing Director at LR, emphasized that this collaboration will provide valuable insights to help shipowners and operators navigate the complexities of digital transformation.
The research will initially focus on cybersecurity and connectivity, identified as essential for digital adoption. It will examine the evolving responsibilities among shipowners, system integrators, and classification societies in light of changing regulatory expectations and operational models. Additionally, real-world experiences from a shipowner involved in a newbuilding program will inform the findings, ensuring practical relevance throughout the vessel’s lifecycle.
Tore Morten Olsen, President of Maritime at Marlink, noted that as vessels become increasingly software-defined, the maritime industry faces challenges within fragmented digital ecosystems. This collaboration seeks to facilitate a more effective approach to maritime digitalisation, leveraging Marlink’s extensive experience in managing complex maritime IT and cybersecurity environments.
