The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) have unveiled the updated Singapore Maritime Technology & Research Roadmap, aimed at enhancing maritime innovation and capabilities. This 2026 edition builds on previous frameworks, emphasizing the translation of research into actionable solutions. It identifies critical areas to bolster resilience, boost productivity, and stimulate innovation within Singapore’s maritime ecosystem.
Key priorities of the roadmap include the large-scale advancement of digital technologies, practical pathways for decarbonization, and improved integration of port and shipping operations. It also addresses structural challenges such as workforce needs and spatial constraints. The roadmap outlines four main action areas: autonomous port operations, safe delivery of alternative energy, smart ships, and intelligent, integrated port services.
By defining these priority areas, the roadmap seeks to align efforts among government entities, research institutions, and industry players, facilitating faster adoption and minimizing implementation risks. Industry partners are encouraged to co-develop solutions and contribute insights to enhance the scalability of proven technologies. Over the next five years, more than $100 million will be allocated to research and development in these priority areas, building on over $500 million invested in maritime R&D over the past two decades.
