A significant search and rescue operation was initiated after an unidentified crew member fell overboard from the Norwegian Breakaway cruise ship off Massachusetts early Sunday morning. The incident took place at 1:15 a.m., approximately 12 miles from Cape Cod, as the ship was returning to Boston following a seven-day cruise to Bermuda.
Security footage recorded the crew member entering the frigid Atlantic waters, leading to an immediate man overboard alert and the deployment of lifeboats. Passengers described the situation as “terrifying” as emergency teams rushed to conduct the rescue.
The U.S. Coast Guard took charge of the search efforts, deploying multiple helicopters from Southeastern New England and Coast Guard Station Provincetown. Despite extensive search operations throughout the morning and afternoon, the missing crew member has not yet been found.
The Norwegian Breakaway arrived at Boston’s Black Falcon Terminal shortly before noon, later than scheduled due to the ongoing rescue mission. Passengers received a letter from the cruise operator addressing the delay and underscoring the importance of safety. The identity of the missing crew member remains undisclosed, and the Coast Guard has temporarily suspended the search pending further information while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fall continue.
