The body of Shivanand Chaurasia, an Indian seafarer killed in a US military strike near Oman, has arrived in his village of Surauli, Deoria. Chaurasia was one of three Indian sailors who lost their lives when a US attack targeted the Palau-flagged tanker, Settebello, on June 10, 2026. His family is now demanding justice and compensation, including ₹1 crore from both the central and state governments, a government job for a dependent, and martyr status for him.
Upon the arrival of Chaurasia’s body at Delhi airport from Muscat, it was transported to Gorakhpur and then brought to his village. The atmosphere was somber as his family—parents, wife, and brother—grieved deeply. In response to the family’s distress, police and administrative officials were deployed to provide support and ensure order.
Initially, the family refused to conduct last rites, insisting on a second post-mortem after presenting their demands to the authorities. District Magistrate Madhusudan Hulgi received their memorandum and promised to address their concerns. Eventually, around 9:30 PM, the family consented to the second post-mortem, with the intention of performing the last rites the following day. Deoria MP Shashank Mani has been actively coordinating with the government regarding the repatriation process.
