On Saturday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a commercial vessel was hit by an unidentified projectile about 18 nautical miles east of Khasab, Oman. The incident caused a fire on board, which was extinguished without any injuries to the crew or environmental harm. While the agency confirmed it received the report from a credible source, it did not disclose the vessel’s identity, flag state, ownership, or details regarding the projectile.
UKMTO has stated that investigations are underway by relevant authorities, urging all vessels in the vicinity to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. They confirmed that there was no environmental impact from the fire but did not provide information on the vessel’s operational status following the incident.
This occurrence coincides with rising regional tensions, particularly after the United Arab Emirates accused Iran of targeting an Abu Dhabi National Oil Company vessel with a missile while it was navigating the Strait of Hormuz. ADNOC reported no injuries from this alleged attack, and the situation was reportedly controlled; however, Iran has yet to respond publicly.
In light of these events, UKMTO has reiterated the importance of maritime security, advising vessels in the area to exercise caution and report any unusual activities, while not linking the projectile strike to the earlier missile incident reported by the UAE.
