Indonesian authorities are currently investigating a tragic incident involving an interisland tanker, the Elisabet Satu, which caught fire and exploded off the coast of Tepekong near Bali. The incident resulted in the loss of five crewmembers, with three severely burned and 12 others sustaining lesser injuries out of the total 21 crewmembers on board. The vessel, built in 2016 and operated by a local company, was reportedly transporting fuel oil at the time of the incident.
Reports indicate that the tragedy unfolded in the early hours of the morning when the crew experienced an explosion, plunging the ship into darkness. The captain immediately called for assistance, prompting the dispatch of fireboats and an evacuation team to the scene. Survivors recounted harrowing experiences, with one crewmember discovering bodies on the deck and others suffering from severe burns.
Following the initial explosion, a second blast rocked the vessel, causing a fire to break out in the engine room. Tragically, five crewmembers lost their lives, while three individuals with severe burns were rushed to the hospital. The remaining crewmembers were also hospitalized, with injuries of varying degrees. Authorities are currently conducting interviews with survivors to determine the cause of the explosions and subsequent fire.
