A consortium led by Stillstrom, part of Maersk, has secured €5 million ($5.8 million) in funding from the EU’s Horizon Europe program to develop offshore charging infrastructure for ships at anchor in Denmark. The three-year SPARK project will establish a pilot Offshore Power Zone in Skagen, a key anchorage hub in Northern Europe, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from vessels idling while stationary.

The consortium includes Aalborg University, DNV, Maersk, MARIN, the Port of Malta, the Port of Skagen, and University College London. The pilot will initially connect one vessel to electricity from the nearby Port of Skagen, with the goal of leveraging findings to promote broader global adoption of offshore charging systems.

Stillstrom CEO Kristian Borum Jørgensen emphasized that stationary vessels represent a significant yet often overlooked source of emissions, highlighting the project’s potential for immediate decarbonization. He expressed gratitude for the collaboration opportunity through the Horizon Europe program, reflecting confidence in the consortium’s capabilities.

The project is set to commence in June 2026 and will span 36 months, marking a critical step towards sustainable maritime operations.
