DNV has introduced a new recommended practice (RP) for using hydrogen as a ship fuel, detailing the necessary competence requirements for crew, inspectors, and technical personnel. With hydrogen becoming increasingly popular—seven vessels currently operate on it and 30 more are on order—safety concerns such as leakage and high-pressure storage remain challenges. However, proper training and robust safety measures can mitigate these risks.
The DNV-RP-0703, titled “Competence related to use of hydrogen as fuel,” specifically addresses hydrogen’s unique risks by outlining structured competence requirements. This RP can guide operational procedures and emergency preparedness, building on DNV’s existing frameworks for low-GHG fuels, including LNG and ammonia.
Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, CEO Maritime at DNV, emphasized the importance of developing safety regulations and industry competence alongside technical advancements to support the safe operation of hydrogen-fueled vessels. The RP aims to complement existing regulatory frameworks, providing guidance for shipowners, maritime academies, and certification bodies.
Kirsten Birgitte Strømsnes, DNV’s Business Development Leader, highlighted the necessity for training on hydrogen’s specific hazards and integrating these risks into management systems. Developed with input from industry partners, the RP is designed to evolve as best practices in hydrogen fuel usage emerge.
