The maritime industry is progressing in terms of gender diversity, with more women working in various roles across different sectors than ever before. However, WISTA International President Elpi Petraki emphasizes the need for continued action and commitment to break down barriers and achieve true equity and inclusion in the workforce. The Women in Maritime survey, launched by the IMO and WISTA International three years ago, serves as a benchmark to measure progress, identify gaps, and inspire action in the industry.
The survey, conducted again in 2024, aims to evaluate advances made by IMO member states and the private sector in promoting gender inclusion. By gathering data and insights from women in shipping, the initiative seeks to inform policies, focus on areas needing attention, and encourage further progress towards gender equality in the maritime sector. The results of the survey will be published in May 2025 as part of the International Day of Women in Maritime celebrations.
In response to requests for an extended deadline, the survey submission deadline has been extended until January 31st, 2025. Companies, organizations, and maritime training institutes are encouraged to participate in filling out the survey, which demonstrates a commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goal for gender equality. By addressing systemic issues and promoting inclusivity in the industry, the survey aims to create a more equitable environment for women in shipping worldwide.
