The Lloyd’s Register Foundation has initiated a USD $674,000 project, C4Safe, aimed at enhancing worker safety and corporate accountability in ocean-related industries. Led by Lancaster University, this initiative will develop a corporate-focused reporting and accountability toolkit tailored for complex maritime environments, providing practical guidance for companies.
Over two years, the project will concentrate on three key areas: worker protection, community impact, and strengthening due diligence. It aims to improve health and safety conditions, ensure communities affected by ocean industries retain access to resources, and prioritize human rights while mitigating risks of forced labor.
C4Safe will address the need for coherent standards that help companies enhance safety and social performance across seven major ocean sectors, including container shipping, cruise tourism, and seafood. By establishing a clear reporting baseline, the project will collaborate with various stakeholders, including stock exchanges and ESG rating agencies, to define expectations and create actionable guidance.
The project is led by Professor Jan Bebbington and includes experts from Duke University and the Stockholm Resilience Centre, with the UN Global Compact Ocean Stewardship Coalition as an impact partner.
