Eighty countries called for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, condemning Iran and its Houthi allies for their attacks that threaten international trade and energy security. Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, delivered a joint statement at the United Nations highlighting the dangers posed by Iran’s actions in the region.
The statement criticized the Houthis for escalating conflict in Yemen and launching attacks on Saudi Arabia, as well as their reckless behavior in the Red Sea. The coalition backing the statement included Gulf Arab states and major Western powers, emphasizing a united front against these threats.
Furthermore, the statement warned that the Houthis’ advances toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could exacerbate risks to maritime security and global trade. Both Iran and the Houthis assert that their actions are defensive in nature, framing their military engagements as necessary for protection.
