Global maritime authorities reaffirm their commitment to ensuring fair treatment and protection for seafarers at a recent meeting held at IMO headquarters in London. Representatives from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Labor Organization (ILO), International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), and International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) underscored the need for collective efforts to uphold seafarers’ rights, highlighting concerns over their unjust criminalization, which undermines trust in the maritime industry.

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez emphasized the critical role of sailors in global trade, calling for enhanced legal protections and better cooperation within the maritime community. Corinne Vargha from the ILO stressed the importance of ratifying the Maritime Labor Convention (MLC) to shield seafarers from unlawful criminal charges. Thomas Kazakos of the ICS echoed this sentiment, advocating improved collaboration to combat unfair treatment.

During the event, participants presented case studies and acknowledged the necessity for judicial training, uniform legal protection, and insurers’ involvement in supporting seafarers. They collectively identified key areas for improvement, including efficient protocols for crew welfare and logistical stability to mitigate disruptions in global trade due to crew detentions. The need for systemic changes to alleviate the burdens faced by these vital workers was emphasized.
