Over 5,600 Filipino seafarers remain stranded aboard more than 500 vessels in the Middle East due to the ongoing crisis in the Gulf region. According to data from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), there are currently 5,663 Filipino crew members stuck on 533 ships in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
Specifically, the DMW reports that 4,844 seafarers are aboard 462 vessels in the Persian Gulf, while 819 seafarers are on 71 vessels in the Gulf of Oman. Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac emphasized that the department is actively monitoring the situation of these Filipino crew members.
Cacdac stated, “There is constant communication with licensed manning agencies and seafarers’ unions for updates about the situation of Filipino crew members.” This ongoing dialogue aims to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected.
In a related development, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) noted that Iran has assured safe passage for Philippine-flagged vessels and ships carrying Filipino seafarers through the Strait of Hormuz. This assurance comes after the Philippines sought a “non-hostile country” status from Iran amid the escalating tensions in the region.
