Leading global maritime associations, including BIMCO, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), INTERCARGO, and INTERTANKO, have jointly condemned a recent surge in attacks targeting seafarers and commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has confirmed 46 such incidents since late February 2026, resulting in 14 seafarer deaths, intensifying concerns over crew safety and the freedom of navigation in this vital shipping route.
The groups stress that commercial ships and their crews are civilians crucial to global trade, and should not be subjected to violence or used as leverage in political or military conflicts. Attacks on merchant shipping directly undermine international law and the principles safeguarding maritime transit. The organizations urge all parties to exercise restraint, comply with the Law of Armed Conflict, and take steps to avoid civilian harm during military operations.
To restore confidence in the region, the associations are calling for an immediate end to attacks, protection of seafarers’ safety, and respect for international navigation rights. They also urge shipowners to prioritize crew safety in operational decisions as the situation evolves, emphasizing that de-escalation and adherence to international law are essential to safeguarding maritime security.
