Efforts are underway to evacuate 11,000 seafarers stranded in the Persian Gulf amid rising geopolitical tensions, particularly in regions like the Strait of Hormuz and the Black Sea. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) emphasizes the daily risks faced by these mariners, especially as they navigate conflict-affected waters. The annual Day of the Seafarer, celebrated on June 25, serves as a platform to acknowledge the vital role seafarers play in global trade and the challenges they encounter.
This year’s theme, “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks,” reminds us that seafarers should not be collateral damage in geopolitical disputes. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez expressed gratitude to the 1.8 million individuals working at sea, highlighting their essential contributions to the global economy and the importance of prioritizing their safety and welfare. He encouraged the maritime community and the public to recognize the unseen sacrifices of seafarers.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also stressed that seafarers often find themselves caught in conflicts, underscoring the need for their protection. The campaign this year centers on sharing personal testimonials from seafarers, who recount their experiences in high-risk areas. Maritime influencers are also contributing to amplify these voices, encouraging global engagement through shared stories and support. The IMO invites everyone to participate using the hashtag #DayoftheSeafarer.
