Singapore Intensifies Efforts for Seafarer Safety Amid Regional Turmoil

During Singapore Maritime Week, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of seafarers affected by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. He reassured industry stakeholders about the government’s proactive measures to facilitate the safe return of those stranded near the Strait of Hormuz, amidst rising regional tensions.

Gan highlighted the close collaboration between the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), ship owners, and operators to secure the safety of crews on vessels. He also mentioned ongoing engagements with ports in the region to provide necessary assistance. Addressing concerns about safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, Gan reiterated Singapore’s firm stance that the right of transit passage should not be negotiable, as it is protected under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

While acknowledging the urgency of ensuring safe maritime operations, Gan reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to uphold international maritime principles during the crisis. Gan concluded by reinforcing Singapore’s dedication to supporting the maritime community and safeguarding global shipping routes.
