On April 21, during Singapore Maritime Week 2026, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) announced a partnership aimed at promoting the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in maritime companies. This initiative seeks to enhance productivity and bolster competitiveness within the sector, aligning with the newly introduced Singapore Maritime Technology & Research Roadmap 2026, which envisions Singapore as a leader in maritime innovation.
Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), MPA and SSA will assist maritime firms in integrating AI into critical areas such as ship management, operations, and bunkering. Companies will have access to a curated knowledge base of AI use cases to inform their adoption strategies, connect with solution providers, and test AI applications in their operations. Additionally, they can utilize the AI Readiness Index framework to assess their AI maturity and determine their next steps.
To facilitate this transition, MPA and SSA will collaborate with educational institutions and service providers to develop training programs that equip employees with necessary skills for evolving roles. Initial training sessions have already begun with 21 participating companies, with a broader rollout expected later in 2026.
The partnership also plans to host a series of industry events, including the Maritime AI Forum in the second half of 2026, aimed at raising awareness and showcasing practical AI applications. As AI continues to transform industries, SSA emphasizes the importance of proactive measures to ensure the maritime sector remains competitive.
