BERG Propulsion is revolutionizing the shipping industry by offering propeller shafts made using the climate neutral GreenForge® production process. Three Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) ro-ro vessels scheduled for service from 2026 are set to benefit from sustainable wind power through rotor sails, hybrid propulsion, and power management technology provided by BERG. These vessels will also be equipped with propeller shafts made from recycled scrap steel using the GreenForge® process, developed by Björneborg Steel. This innovative process utilizes renewable electricity sources and fossil-free biogas rDME or bio-propane, significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

By utilizing the GreenForge® process, BERG Propulsion will deliver the world’s first climate neutral propeller shafts to Louis Dreyfus Armateurs. Björneborg Steel estimates that producing six propeller shafts for LDA using this process will result in a reduction of 160 tonnes of CO2 compared to conventional methods. The first climate neutral propeller shaft is expected to be delivered to the BERG plant in Hönö, Sweden in March, with five more to follow by June 2025. Björneborg Steel aims to transition its full production to the GreenForge® process by 2027, based on demand and environmental considerations.

Overall, the collaboration between BERG Propulsion, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, and Björneborg Steel represents a significant step towards sustainable shipping practices. By incorporating climate neutral propeller shafts and other eco-friendly technologies, these companies are leading the way in reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental stewardship in the maritime industry. This partnership showcases the potential for innovative solutions to address climate change challenges and drive the transition towards a more sustainable future for shipping operations.
