Singapore was elected to the council of the International Organisation for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA) for the term of 2025 to 2027 during the organisation’s inaugural general assembly on Feb 20. Previously known as the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities, IALA transitioned into an intergovernmental organisation in August 2024. Singapore has been a national member of IALA since 1972 and a council member since 2018. IALA is responsible for developing global standards, recommendations, and guidelines on marine aids to navigation, vessel traffic services, and e-navigation.
The Ministry of Transport (MOT) announced that Singapore’s election to the council will enhance collaboration with IALA and member states in setting technical standards for harmonizing marine aids to navigation, such as lighthouses, buoys, and fog signals. Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat emphasized Singapore’s commitment to supporting IALA in developing global standards for harmonizing marine aids to navigation worldwide. The Singapore Declaration, adopted during the general assembly, aims to strengthen international collaboration for the development of maritime navigational aids and support member states in enhancing their capacities in marine navigational aids.
Singapore will continue its partnership with IALA World-Wide Academy to fund and support capacity building and human resource development for IALA members. Minister Chee congratulated IALA on its successful transition to an intergovernmental organisation and reiterated Singapore’s dedication to advancing global maritime safety. The election of Singapore to the IALA council demonstrates the country’s position as a leading maritime hub port and coastal state, committed to promoting international partnerships and harmonizing marine aids to navigation.
