The geophysical survey vessel Fugro Mercator recently ran aground off the north coast of Elba, Italy on March 22. The Italian coastguard quickly responded to the situation, providing support and ensuring the safe evacuation of all 11 crew members. Currently, a salvage operation is being planned in collaboration with international experts and local authorities to address the situation.

The exact cause of the Fugro Mercator running aground is still unknown. The 42-meter research vessel was conducting survey work in the area when it sought shelter due to worsening weather conditions. Fugro, the company operating the vessel, is following standard procedures and conducting a thorough review of the incident to determine what led to the grounding.

Despite the unfortunate incident, all crew members were safely taken ashore, and there were no reported injuries. The vessel’s grounding serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of maritime operations and the importance of swift response and collaboration between authorities and industry experts in such situations. The focus now is on preparing for the salvage operation to minimize any potential environmental impact and safely recover the vessel.
